Teaching Interdependence

... was the title of the Keynote address I gave to 500+ educators at this year's B.Y.T.E. conference. The sense I had of the audience was that many of the ideas I talked about here were new to them. A quick survey of the room while giving the talk revealed only about three people had heard of Wolfram Alpha and I think about the same number had heard of the TPACK Framework.




I hope I get a chance to do this talk again. There are a number of things I think I could have done better.

Problem Solving

For two years now I've been thinking that the solutions to the world's present and future problems will be found in the interstices between the disciplines rather than any one discipline. I foresee a time when Nobel Prizes will be shared by people who work in the arts and the sciences; a musician and a biologist or an artist and a mathematician. So along comes these two TED talks given by two different scientists from two geographically distant places exploring incredibly complex and difficult problems and finding solutions in the interstices between their own field of study and a host of others.


Like William Gibson said: "The future is here. It's just not evenly distributed." Yet.

A Really Smart Board

I just can't get enough of the TED conference: exploring the intersection of great ideas from diverse disciplines. That's where all the greatest future innovations will come from.


Watch this. Google Earth is passé when you can access NASA's databases and manipulate them visually just by dragging your fingertips across an "interface-free," touch-driven computer screen.


Where does stuff like this come from? .... mathematics research. ;-)

Just imagine what teaching will look like when these are in all our classrooms. A Smart Board doesn't even come close ... and I can't wait to get a smart board. ;-)
