The Difference Between Curriculum and Pedagogy

There's a difference between curriculum and pedagogy. Curriculum is all about what we teach. Pedagogy is about how we teach it.





There's also a difference between knowing how to do something and understanding what you're doing. In mathematics there are all kinds of "how-to", or computation skills, that kids learn and promptly forget right after the test; sometimes they forget before the test. The thing is though, it's difficult to forget something once you understand it.

A few weeks ago I was part of a panel on the Richard Cloutier Reports show on CJOB radio here in Winnipeg. There were four of us: myself, Paul Olson (President of the Manitoba Teacher's Society), Robert Craigen (Associate Professor of Mathematics, University of Manitoba) and Anna Stokke (Associate Professor of Mathematics, University of Winnipeg). Robert and Anna are one-half of the group behind the wisemath blog.





There are some things we agree on:

  • All kids can and should learn basic computation skills (how to add, subtract, multiply and divide).

  • It's important for kids to understand what they're doing, not just to be able to perform by rote.

  • Manitoba's recent poor performance on the Pan-Canadian Assessment Programme test is not good news and we have some work to do in mathematics in Manitoba.

  • We'd like to see Manitoba place at the top of future national and international tests of this sort.

Some things we disagree on. I believe:

  • Learning with understanding should precede the learning of rote algorithms in mathematics.

  • To say Manitoba has placed 10th out of 11 provinces and territories in the 2010 PCAP test is a gross oversimplification of the the data represented on page 24 of the report (pdf). (Those confidence intervals are important. A repeat of the same test would likely have Manitoba place somewhere between 6th and 11th place. This isn't good news, but it's a little more nuanced than "10 out of 11". People knowledgeable about mathematics should be helping the public understand these nuances and promote informed discussion.)

So the crux of our differences are two-fold:





(1) I believe Robert and Anna conflate curriculum and pedagogy and are reading the Manitoba Curriculum documents as pedagogical texts when they were never intended to be read that way. Curriculum tells us "what" to teach, not "how" to teach.





(2) Robert and Anna believe the teaching of algorithms should be student's entry point to learning the basic operations (+, -, x, ÷). I believe the algorithms should be closer to the end-game of learning the basic operations.





John Scammel blogged about his take on the views expressed on Robert and Anna's blog. John points out in the comments the clear distinction the wisemath blog draws between Mathematicians and Mathematics Educators and the populations we teach. In K-12 classrooms we teach all students. The student body in University is different. Students taking math at University want to be there. That's not true of many students in the K-12 sector; the challenges are quite different.





On further reflection, there's a third difference: public (and private) debate should be open and sidestep insult.





The wisemath site seems to reject any comments that debate the blogger's views.





What I've read in the comments on John's blog and on Anna's blog (The last sentence of the last paragraph was recently edited; it used to say all future mathematics education research has no merit as a result of the issues Anna took with the article she blogged about. I regard this edit as a positive evolution in her thinking.) seems to hold K-12 teachers in a disdainful light.





Here's the audio from the CJOB panel we sat on together. It was a 2 hour broadcast, without commercials it's about 58 min. I took out the commercials. We talked about much more than was broadcast in the moments we were "off air". That was also an interesting conversation; unfortunately we didn't capture it. Next time I'll bring along my mp3 recorder. ;-)

Problem Solving

For two years now I've been thinking that the solutions to the world's present and future problems will be found in the interstices between the disciplines rather than any one discipline. I foresee a time when Nobel Prizes will be shared by people who work in the arts and the sciences; a musician and a biologist or an artist and a mathematician. So along comes these two TED talks given by two different scientists from two geographically distant places exploring incredibly complex and difficult problems and finding solutions in the interstices between their own field of study and a host of others.


Like William Gibson said: "The future is here. It's just not evenly distributed." Yet.

Les Foltos: Brainstorm and Wrap Up


This is the closing keynote presentation given by Les Foltos, Director of the Puget Sound Center for Teacher Learning and Technology, at the Microsoft Innovative Educators Conference held in Winnipeg on May 29, 2008. (The site appears to be down, or broken, now. I thought it was supposed to serve as a commons around which a growing network of teachers was going to built. I wonder what happened?)


This is the last podcast from the from the conference I recorded. It's a little noisy to listen to. We were all talking in small groups trying to crystallize what we had learned over the previous two days. The good news is we talked about many of the same things that we had discussed in the previous day's Ustream. The voices you hear talking in our little group are me, Clarence Fisher, Chris Harbeck, John Evans, Andy McKiel, Kathy Cassidy, and another lady whose name, unfortunately, I've forgotten. She was sitting in a neighbouring group and kept looking over at us, interested in what we were talking about. So, I invited her over and I'm glad she joined us. Richard Van Eck: Games Based Learning Breakout Session


This is the audio from Richard Van Eck's breakout session at the Microsoft Innovative Educators Conference. It's full of very practical ideas for how to incorporate using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) games in teaching a variety of subjects in the K-12 curriculum. Rick's presentations are very grounded with very little flash in his slides but lots of good concrete ideas to take back to the classroom. The night before this session Rick gave a keynote presentation on games based learning. He was asked if the kind of learning kids do in games based learning transfers well to the content areas. He looked the questioner straight in the eye and said, loudly and clearly: No. Then he fleshed out that answer. I still might be able to track down the audio from the keynote. If I can get it I'll publish it here. In the mean time this is a very practical talk about how to begin using COTS games in your classroom.


At about 19 minutes in Rick tried to get online but was locked out. Thankfully, Chris Harbeck was there and had the password. ;-)

Arnold Wasserman: Innovation in Education


This is the Keynote presentation given by Arnold Wasserman on the second morning of the Microsoft Innovative Teachers Conference last week. The venue for the conference was the Red River College downtown campus here in Winnipeg. It was a beautiful place to hold the conference. The architecture is an innovative marriage between old and new.


This keynote was immediately followed by a presentation given by Ken Zorniak of Frantic Films. It was an interesting view inside the work that goes into the computer generated visual effects in the movies but we really needed some time to decompress and talk about the things Arnold had said in this talk. Several of us were struck by the many similarities between what Arnold talked about here and the conversation we Ustreamed the day before. Although we didn't record the Ustream we did capture many of the ideas that came up in that session at the end of the day in the session facilitated by Les Foltos from the Puget Sound Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology.

Arnold Wasserman: Culture of Innovation

I had the good fortune to be invited to attend Microsoft's inaugural Innovative Teachers Conference this past week. As always, the highlights for me were the people and the conversations we had in the hallways and over good food.


By far, the best part was meeting face to face for the first time with Kathy Cassidy and Ben Hazzard. When you mix in Clarence Fisher, Chris Harbeck, John Evans, Joan Badger with an open Ustream feed to bring in Dean Shareski, Alec Couros, and a wider network of passionate educators via twitter you get some of the best professional development around. Unfortunately we didn't record it. However, about 100 seconds were captured by Rodd Lucier, thanks for that Rodd!


Lesson Learned: Always record in Ustream. And if you're watching and wondering if you should screencast, the answer is: yes!






The conference opened with a keynote presentation by Arnold Wasserman from The Idea Factory. His presentation was titled The Culture of Innovation. It was filled with thought provoking ideas but I strongly disagree with his essential message in this first presentation of two: It is impossible to innovate your professional practice unless the organization within which you work is an innovative organization.

I captured three other podcasts during the conference which I will share here over the next few days: Arnold Wasserman (part 2), Richard Van Eck (on educational gaming; he was the highlight presenter of the conference for me), and Les Foltos' closing session that had several of us brianstorming around the idea of what the ideal innovative classroom would look like: physically, pedagogically, and with an eye towards teachers professional development.

Manitoba Edubloggercon: Our First Ever!

Clarence, Chris and I have been talking about this for a while and last night decided to make it happen. We may be a small community but we can do BIG PD just by getting together for some good food, folks and fun. Most of this is mirrored from Clarence's blog ... it may be time to start a new SAG (non-Manitobans, see link below). ;-)
